Andrew Brooks Photography

Ok, to kick this Blog off I want to talk a bit about a project that involves other people’s photography.

"Seeing the cotton mills pumping out smoke in the background and discovering that the University grew from the need for training the workforce in what were the white hot technological and engineering skills of the time was fascinating. In my selections from this amazing historical archive, I tried to pick the pictures which had the most impact on me, be it through their great composition and lighting, the power of the narrative or even just a touch of humour in their subject matter."

I have an upcoming exhibition of work showing at Salford Art Gallery from May the 17th till August the 17th, The exhibition shows a selection of the work I have done for the university which you can see by going to this page as well as a section which looks at the massive archive of photography that the University hold, showing it from it's very first days in 1896 till the early 90's, then I think everything went digital so is stored on computers somewhere.

From the Archive I made a selection of the images which I thought were most interesting, be they pictures which tell the story of the University well, images with a bit of humour, or just very nice pictures. Then the picture I chose I flat copied.

And then using lot's of methods I cleaned the images up, giving them more punch and getting rid of any colour cast they have picked up over the years.

Then I created a blank book as a canvas for dropping the images into, to create a fictional Archive, giving me the chance to pull pictures from different area's and present them as a story in the way I wanted.

Then I created 12 full-page spreads talking about all the elements of the university.

You can see all these pages by going to this gallery.
